We'll keep an eye on current best practice in the media both here and abroad and provide up-to-date practical advice pertinent to small scale poultry keepers. We are a fledgling group hoping to extend our remit as support grows.
Existing organizations (representing the commercial poultry industry, smallholders, breeders, or those who exhibit) offer advice that seems irrelevant and draconian to those who just want to keep a few hens in their gardens.

Elm Farm Research Centre (www.efrc.com/vacnat ) and the Soil Association (www.soilassociation.org ) have carried out extensive and persuasive research to encourage the government (Defra) to allow vaccination of commercial poultry, as a way of preventing the spread of avian flu, rather than mass culling (as carried out during the foot and mouth outbreak).

A vaccine has already been developed and our small flocks could easily be vaccinated as a preventative measure and certificated by vets, but this must be recognized by Defra as a viable alternative to a visit from the men in white. Join us and help to protect your family’s pet hens.
*Encourage all your friends to join the Henkeepers’ Association. The more muscle we have – the better.
